Sizes for typical room setups
A quick reference for the most common spaces.
Living room
Anchor the seating area — keep the front legs of sofas and chairs on the rug.
Dining room
Leave ~60 cm beyond the table on every side so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.
Bedroom
Slide the rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed so it frames the foot and sides.
Hallway / Entryway
Choose a runner that leaves 8–12 cm of floor on each long side.
Round / accent
Great for reading nooks, round tables and small entries where a soft shape works best.
Open plan / oversized
Define a whole zone in a large space. Bigger is almost always better here.
Measure twice
Use a tape measure for the full room, then mark out your shortlisted rug size with masking tape before you buy.
Leave a border
Aim for 20–45 cm of bare floor between the rug edge and the walls so the room feels balanced.
When in doubt, size up
A rug that is slightly too big makes a room feel larger; one that is too small makes furniture feel disconnected.
